We have become a nation of savvy shoppers. We know where to go to get the best deals, we check voucher sites before making a purchase online and whilst we once shunned loyalty points and vouchers they have now become valid currency in the game to get more for less.
So as a business what should we be making of this phenomena? One thing is clear – to get more business it has to be attractive to potential new customers and rewarding to existing ones. These days it doesn’t matter what type of business you are in, you are in a very competitive market! From cafes (free coffee for every 6 purchased) to holidays (stay 6 nights and get one free) if you do not have an edge then the consumer will click or walk away…..
However frustrating this seems to the small business owner the aim is to lure new customers in and then use that opportunity to demonstrate why they should keep coming back to you. It may take a one off knock-your-socks-off deal but this could be worth every penny in repeat business.

In 1921 the phrase “a picture paints a thousand words” was coined by Frederick Barnard describing the effectiveness of using graphics in advertising. And he wasn’t wrong. Designing for the web has the benefit of plenty of white space for including all of your graphics and allows for varied ways to promote your message or products. Designing for print however does not have that luxury. Often there is limited opportunity for graphics and it falls to the words, the typography, to make an impact on your audience.
In print design typography is a crucial element. Typography essentially involves the application of organising, arranging and adapting type. In print, typography doesn’t have to be dull and lifeless. It has the opportunity to be stunning, imaginative, inspired and colourful. There are plenty of ways to enliven your printed piece through typography; innovative and original layouts, colour variations, inspired use of fonts plus more besides.
